Out-Cell Touch Technology
It has been common to add the touch sensors as a separate or discrete overlay atop the display in a laminated panel stack-up (These designs are called “discrete” to emphasize the fact that the touch function exists separately as an overlay on the display.). With this design, the sensors are added either on a glass or in a dedicated sensor layer.
Designs with a separate sensor layer are known as Out-Cell Touch Technology, such as Glass-Glass (GG) and Glass-Film-Film(GFF), depending on whether the transmitting and receiving touch functions are implemented in one or two layers, respectively, of the sensor film or sensor glass.
Out-Cell Touch is a handy alternative for iPhone display replacement and has the proven low-risk advantages with short time-to-market and good price. It also has obvious disadvantages, however, such as making the panel stack-up thicker, dimmer, and slower.
In-Cell Touch Technology
Integrates the touch sensors directly into one or more layers in the display stack-up itself.
In-Cell technology removes the touch sensor substrate, by combining the liquid crystal and touch sensing elements into a single structure (The term Full In-Cell means that the transmitting and receiving touch sensor layers are both within the cell). Apple started implementing In-Cell Touch with iPhone 5 in 2012.
In-cell display technology combines the touch sensor layer and LCD cell into a single layer, allowing devices to be thinner and lighter.

The new LCD panel incorporating the “3D in-cell touch” function is an exclusive development by HCQS, which combines the liquid crystal, touch sensing elements and 3D touch capacitive sensors into a single structure (3D Touch is a more sensitive version of Force Touch developed and introduced by Apple Inc. in 2015 and has been utilized in iPhone 6S and later models.).
3D In-Cell Touch reduces the thickness of the display panel by integrating the LCD, the touchscreen layer and the 3D capacitive sensor layer into a single unit, rather than stacking the three layers on top of one another. As a result, it reduces the panel’s thickness and weight, featuring an excellent touch response and precise calibration of the touch point.
Integrated Driver Controller IC (IDC)
Different from traditional multi-chip solutions, 3D In-cell Touch requires only one Integrated Driver Controller IC (IDC) to drive display, touch and 3D touch functions.
IDC solution features narrow module design and high signal-to-noise ratio. As a result, it maximizes touch accuracy and sensitivity performance at ultra-low power consumption – an excellent alternative display for iPhone.
